Career as Textile Designer

The job of a Textile Designer revolves around creating patterns or designs for printed, knitted or woven textiles. The fashion and design industry is always in demand for creative people who can design new ideas and fresh takes. As a Textile Designer, you can design clothing and accessories for the general public or even for the technical market that includes safety clothing for workers. You can also work in the furniture industry, designing fabrics. Many major paper-based companies hire Textile Designers to help produce printed paper-based materials.

Upon competition of the UG course in textile designing a student can apply for different jobs. Here are some of the job roles and how much a student could earn doing them. Most of these jobs will deal with the creative aspect of being a textile designer. 

  • Textile Designer: As a textile designer, you will be employed in the fashion industry. You can also choose a job in the interior designing industry. In the interior designing industry, you will be asked to design linens, rugs, fabric for furniture, towels, etc. As a textile designer, you will design yarns, fabrics, prints, trims, etc. You may also be asked to create artwork using fabrics. The average starting salary is Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. 


  • Embroidery Designer: You can land the job of a professional embroiderer if you are good with using a needle. There are many training programs one can apply to in order to learn the art of embroidery. There are many Indian as well as multinational firms that offer jobs in this particular role. Your annual salary will be around Rs 3,60,000  


  • Fabric Resource Manager: There are many roles that come under this position. Some examples are fabric designer, fabric stylist, design assistant, etc. You will require a bit more training for this role. You will also need some experience in the field to apply for this position. You can apply to public or private firms or even start your own business. The starting salary is Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 .


  • Fabric Analyst: As a fabric analyst. Your main job is to keep up with trends and fashion culture to know what is trending now and craft your design accordingly. You can also get hired by companies who want to keep up with the times. You can get a job in the fashion industry as well as in the interior design industry. The starting salary is Rs 55,000 to Rs 65,000 based on qualification and experience. 


  • Design Consultant: This is for those who like adding finishing touches to designs. As a consultant, you will be asked to see if any design needs improvement or alterations. You will need to keep up with the times and talk to customers to see if their wants and needs are being expressed in the finished product. The starting salary is Rs 50,000 to Rs 55,000.

How do I get there?

To apply for any UG course, the student must have completed their Class 12 or Senior secondary exam from a recognized board with passing marks. Most colleges have a requirement of 50% marks in their candidate's 10+2 exams. This is different depending on the category as 50% only applies to the general category, and it is 45% for the ST/SC/OBC. 

Students who want to apply for the PG level in Textile Design course should have completed their graduation from a recognized university, institute or college. The stream does not matter as long as the students possess the required skill set.

For students who want to make a career in this field, there are a number of courses to choose from. These courses range from diplomas to undergraduate to even Masters. The undergraduate courses can take 3 to 4 years to complete while the Master’s level takes two years.

How much does it cost?

The UG course fee in textile designing starts at Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakh and above. Be aware that this differs from university to university and college to college. Each college/university and institute has its own duration. While this course is often given 3-4 years to complete some colleges/universities have their courses for just two years. The course is divided into the semester system, with six semesters being the most common.
