History
Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Sudbury’s Laurentian University. In 1967, Algoma College started offering classes. In 1971, Algoma College moved to the former Shingwauk Residential School Building. Then, in 1989, Arthur A. Wishart Library was opened. In 1995 and 2001, Student Residence Buildings were constructed. Finally, in 2008, after operating as Algoma University College for many years, Algoma University Canada was granted its charter, achieving full autonomous university status as Ontario’s 19th century.
The Algoma University Act 2008 was then amended in 2021 to authorize Algoma University to offer Graduate Degrees, Certificates, and Diplomas in any and all branches of teaching and learning. At present, Algoma University offers over 30 academic programs across three campuses; Brampton, Sault Ste. Marie, and Timmins. The programs are offered in diverse fields and through four faculties: Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Cross-Cultural Studies, and Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. In 2009, Algoma University celebrated its first graduation class. Furthermore, in the same year, Brampton Campus of the university was launched. In 2013, Algoma University began competing in the university-level inter-collegial sport.
