  • All India Services have a crucial role to play in the development of the country. Central and State civil servants are in charge of the governance of the various departments (non-military) to ensure that the administrative infrastructure works according to the constitutional provision
  • Civil Servants have 'power' and 'authority'. They are responsible for city administration,  energy conservation,wasteland development, water resources, etc,
  • Are in bureaucracy closely associated with decision making, policy formulations and its execution.
  • Services need individuals with an intense desire for field work and an inclination for interaction with the common men and women

Indian Foreign Service, Indian Posts and Telegraphs Accounts and Finance Service; Indian Audit and Accounts Service; Indian Customs and Central Excise Service; Indian Revenue Service; Indian Ordinance Factories Service;  Indian Postal Service; Indian Civil Accounts Service; Indian Railway Traffic Service ; Indian Railway Personnel Service; Indian Railway Accounts Service ,Posts of Assistants Security Officer in Railway Protection Service; Indian Defence Estates Service;  Indian Information Service; Central Trade Service and Posts of Assistant Commandant in the Central Industrial Security Force, etc. There are group B and State Administrative Services too.

*The Civil Services Examination is held in two phases - the first is called the preliminary examination (Prelims). This has 2 compulsory papers - the general studies and general aptitude paper. Age 21-31 years(must not have attained the age of 32 years on the 1st of August). Exam is held in May.

The second Main examination is held in Oct/Nov. After that, there is the personality test or viva-voce before the final selection.

  • Preliminary Examination
Comprises of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The question papers are objective (multiple choice questions) of two hours duration and are set in Hindi and English. English Language Comprehension skills is only in English
  • Main Examination 

Paper 1- One language (300 marks)
Paper 2 - English (300 marks)
Paper 3- Essay( 200 marks)
Paper 4 & 5- General Studies (300 marks each)
Paper 6,7,8,9- Any 2 prescribed optional subjects(2 papers each subject) (300 marks for each paper)

  • Interview

** Selected candidates go through a two years probation period.

Recruitment of Doctors, Engineers, Geologists, Economists and Statisticians for posts in the Central government organizations is carried out through separate examinations conducted by UPSC.
