Career as Naval Officer

The Navy protects and safeguards the country's exclusive economic zone, the ocean resources and the coasts from any invasion. Navy consists of the combat fleet, support ships, personnel, training establishments and the land bases. It has patrol boats, torpedo crafts ( for patrolling and safeguarding coastal regions), warships, aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, frigates and submarines. Support ships, also known as auxiliary ships, provide them with fuel, rations, armament repair facilities and various other services. The officers and sailors are trained to meet the challenge at sea.

  • Officers work in the following departments:
Executive branch
This is the Operational Branch of the Navy. It has
(a) General Service ; (b) Aviation Arm and (c) Submarine Arm

General Service

  • Executive Officers manage the ship and use the ship as an instrument of tactical warfare. 
  • The Executive Officers specialise in:
  • Gunnery and missiles
  • Navigation and direction
  • Torpedo and anti-submarine warfare
  • Communications
  • Logistic management
  • Hydrography
  • Armament inspection
Logistics branch
  • Manages supplies e.g fuel, water and spares for the vast array of sophisticated equipment and machinery on land and at sea
Naval armament inspection officer 
  • Inspects of armaments supplied to the Navy by various agencies
  • Ensure the quality, safety and reliability of naval armament and stores
  • Are responsible for in-house research and development
Hydrographic surveyors
  • Responsible for collecting information needed for the charts used by the Indian Navy and other Navies around the world
Aviation arm officer
  • Navy pilots and observers act as airborne tactical coordinators of maritime warfare, fly ship borne helicopters and shore based maritime reconnaissance aircrafts
  • Naval aircrafts locate and attack enemy surface ships and submarines
  • Fight amphibious warfare
  • Carryout search and rescue operations
  • Evacuate casualty in wartime
Submarine Arm Officer
  • In peace time train for war as effectively as possible
  • Modern ships, submarines and aircrafts have advanced technological systems. The Engineering Branch is responsible for keeping all these and their equipments serviceable. Engineers work in shore jobs in naval dockyards, laboratories and indigenous production units
  • Navy employs engineers of various disciplines. Naval College of Engineering at Lonavala near Pune and Electrical Training Establishment at Jamnagar provide further training.
Naval architects
  • Design, construct, quality control, repair and carry out new construction work of naval vessels
Electrical branch officer
  • Manages efficient maintenance of computer based or computer-aided weapon systems, missile systems, underwater weapons, radars and raid communication equipment
Education branch officer
  • Is responsible for imparting theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the Navy and for general education, both ashore and afloat
  • Specialize in Oceanography and Meteorology and also in any of the specializations of the General Service, Executive Branch
Law officers
  • Advise on evidence in court martial and other disciplinary actions and give legal advice to naval staff in various civil matters

*National Defence Academy , Pune. A competitive examination is held twice in a year, in February & September, for a 3 year training course commencing in January and July. Only unmarried male candidates age between 16 1/2 and 19 years are eligible
**Naval Engineering College
Navy  selects candidates for their Engineering College at Lonavala based on merit in the qualifying exam(min 70%). Male candidates between the age of 16 1/2 and 19 years who have passed XII with Maths, Physics and Chemistry are eligible to apply. The Naval Engineering College trains cadets selected in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The course starts in December.
