Career as Paleontologist
Paleontology is the field of study of science which existed before and including the Holocene Epoch. This study focuses on determining the evolution of organisms and their interaction with their surroundings, through studying fossils. Paleontology lies on the borders of Biology and Geology. But, it is different from Archaeology in the sense that it excludes the study of anatomically modern humans. It includes techniques drawn from a range of Sciences, including Biochemistry, Mathematics and Engineering. Through these techniques, Paleontologists have been able to discover the evolutionary history of life. Due to advancements in information, paleontology has developed specialized sub-divisions, some of which concentrate on different types of fossil organisms, while the others study ecology and environmental history, such as ancient climates. Paleontology is the study of ancient life and it aims to focus on several aspects of past organisms.

Job Profile
The scope in Paleontology is huge if a person
has great expertise and knowledge for performing critical jobs.
Palaeontologists deal with information pertaining to the
prehistoric era. It is crucial for professionals to have analytical
and data interpretation skills. A Palaeontologist’s job involves
extensive travelling to historic and primitive places in search of
evidence of primitive life. There are a number of geological as
well as archaeological institutes in India and abroad that are
always on the lookout for qualified Paleontologists.
Many Paleontologists find work in surveys that are conducted by the
Government. Some Paleontologists come across opportunities of
working with museums along with carrying out their research on
various subjects. Other Paleontologists teach at universities or
study the evolution of plants and animals in private research
facilities. Experienced Paleontologists with leadership qualities
often end up with roles like project managers or senior researchers
on various government-funded or privately financed research
projects.
In the initial stages of employment, Paleontologists are often offered job roles that involve a lot of fieldwork. They may be employed as research assistants or technicians in laboratories. University graduates with doctorate degrees come across great employment opportunities.

Paleoceanography/Paleoclimatology -This field of study focuses on past ocean climates and Paleoclimatology focuses on biochemical changes. Their main focus is the geological history of Earth. It is an important field of study to provide a basis for predictive conclusions.
-
Science Journalist -This job role would allow professionals to venture into media and communication.
-
Paleoanthropologists - This field of study focuses on researching the origins, developments and evolution of prehistoric humans. Various archaeology and ethnology techniques such as comparative anatomy and radio-active decay rates are required to work in this field.
-
Ichnologist -It is the study of tracing fossils. The career field is considered Earth Science.
-
Paleobotanist - It is similar to the job role of an Ichnologist, but, it focuses on the research of fossil plants.
-
Paleontology Lab Manager - This job role focuses on the industrial side of infrastructure.
-
Vertebrate Paleontologist - These professionals are often hired as anatomy instructors.
-
Paleocologist - A Paleocologist is responsible for conducting field research to rebuild past ecosystems, ecologies and climates. This is done through the examination and comparison of animal fossils, flora, chemicals trapped in air pockets etc.
