How do I get there?
Teaching career at different level requires different
qualifications. However, you can opt for the teaching career
irrespective of your stream of study in 10+2 or graduation
level.
The minimum qualifications required as per
different levels of the school are:
- Nursery or Kindergarten level- You should have passed 10+2 level in any stream and have an NTT course done.
- Primary level- You should be a graduate from any stream along with an NTT or B.Ed degree.
- High School level- You should be a graduate with a B.Ed degree, and you must have cleared CTET or STET.
- Secondary level- You must have a postgraduate degree in
the subject you wish to teach at this level along with a B.Ed
degree.
The minimum qualifications required to be able to
teach at College or University level are:
- Assistant professor- You need to have a Masters degree in the subject concerned with minimum 55% marks. You must also clear the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC twice a year to be appointed as a professor in maximum National and State Colleges and Universities.
- Professor- After about 7 to 12 years of experience (depending on the concerned University authorities) you will be promoted to the post of a Professor from an Assistant Professor.
How much does it cost?
The cost of becoming a teacher varies according to the
level of education that you will be teaching.
1. Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) - This is a requirement
for school level teaching. The course fees for pursuing B.Ed ranges
from 6000 INR to about 1 lakh INR per annum depending on the
college you opt for the study. You can also pursue B.Ed courses
from Open Universities with minimal course fees.
2. Nursery Teacher Training (NTT)- Required for only
pre-primary and primary level of education, you can pursue NTT from
many state governments, private and open universities with
extremely affordable fees ranging from Rs 5000 to 25,000 per
year.
3. Masters Degree- Required for secondary to the university level of education, you can obtain a masters degree in your desired field of study at several central and state government institutes, open universities and private institutes. The course fees depend on your area of specialisation and vary immensely; from a few thousands to a few lakhs per year.
Other than the course fees to become an educator, a teacher is sometimes required to contribute towards different social and developmental activities carried out by the institute. Thus teaching career is dedicated to serving the society at large.
