Candidates must have a valid score from the national entrance test, either the INI CET or the NEET MDS, in order to be eligible for MDS. NEET PG is the eligibility-cum-ranking test that D.Y. Patil Dental College requires as the entrance exam for MDS. Based on the National Eligibility and Entrance Test merit list, all dental educational institutions will use a common counselling process for admission to all postgraduate MDS courses. The Directorate General of Health Services is responsible for providing common counselling services. The ‘All India Common Entrance Test’ conducted by Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune is also a valid consideration.

The candidate's NEET-MDS percentile score must be at least 50% (40 for SC/ST/OBC applicants, including PWD of SC/ST/OBC, and 45 for UR PWD candidates). The candidate needs to have graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from an Indian university or institute, registered with the State Dental Council, obtained a provisional or permanent registration, and finished the obligatory one-year rotating internship at a recognised or recognised dental college. Admission to all postgraduate courses in MDS at Dental Educational Institutions would be determined by a common counselling process based on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test merit list. The Directorate General of Health Services is responsible for conducting common counselling.
