The selection criteria for the B.E./B.Tech course at GCELT is primarily based on performance in entrance exams. Candidates must have passed 10+2 from any recognised board with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. Admission is mainly through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) or through the All India JEE Main exam. Candidates are needed to achieve cut-off ranks for the courses. The college offers some seats under lateral entry in case of Diploma holders also. Candidates who have passed the entrance exam are included in the counseling process for seat allocation at central level.

For example, recently, for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in general category, the cutoff has been around 3600-4600, whereas for Leather Technology, the cutoff is much higher, with general category ranks ranging from 6000 to 12000. For reserved categories like SC and ST, cutoff ranks are usually higher. Admission will be granted only to those candidates who qualify in the WBJEE exam and participate in counseling according to their rank.

The food is purposeful, yet it won't meet the demands of many students who are brought up consuming a variety of and tasteful foods. It provides some basic meals, which are offered separately from hostel fees. Some students find the food provided is adequate, but others consider the quality and variety of food to be lacking. The hostel accommodation is based on shared rooms and has three students per room, although it is not necessary to have food if staying in the hostel, but it can be available for those living there.
