Review of Government Dental College, Trivandrum.
Placements: Our batch has 100 students. I got admission in 2012. There were 62 girls and 38 boys in our batch. Out of 100, only 54 students completed in 1st attempt, and the rest 46 are in the minor batch. If you do BDS from a government college, you will get 12,000-18,000 per month as a stipend for your internship, but you do not get this from a private dental college. After that, you have a scope to open a private dental clinic or do post-graduation or prepare for government job exams as a BDS doctor. The average package offered for an assistant dentist is around 15,000-20,000, which is a little less, but as you gain knowledge and experience, your earnings will also increase. If you do boost graduation from a government dental college, you can earn 70,000-1 Lac as a stipend per month, but you have to study hard and to crack this exam.
Infrastructure: The facilities in our college are good. There is free Wi-Fi available only for final years, interns and doctors. Good and high-speed Wi-Fi is available in the library and departments for academic internet surfing. There is a pathology lab that includes all our basic specimens and instruments for work. A microbiology lab is available with a working microscope. Classrooms are good and large, contain 100 tables and good projectors for taking lectures. The library has a good and peaceful environment for reading. It has two halls and 40-50 chairs for reading and internet surfing for your academics and project work. There are around 5,000 dental-related books and 2,000 other books available in the library. Both boys and girls have separate hostels with 100 rooms in each. Each room has 2 chairs and tables, a wardrobe and a mirror.
Faculty: All the teachers are knowledgeable, well-qualified, skillful and talented. They create a really good and friendly environment so that we could make good doctors. They do not scold you if you make any mistake, instead, they give you the advice to correct it. They create a friendly environment in which students can grow and overcome their shy and fear. Professors also help if you have any doubts. The course is curriculum relevant. They teach extra practical skills. If you take basic fundamentals with good practical knowledge, you definitely understand things. Semester exams are really challenging and tough. You need to prepare well. Each subject is of 100 marks, 80 marks are for theory, and 20 marks are for viva. The passing marks are 35, but there is a really tough marking system.
Other: I chose dentistry because I loved it. Many of my seniors and friends from school are doing MBBS, where one has to make an extra effort to clear all exams. So, I chose this. I would suggest taking online coaching for better fundamental knowledge. College life is really good. There is one grand party every year on 31st December, with dance, singing performances, drama and dinner. There 2 grounds available on campus, one for cricket and the other one is for girls to play badminton. There is also a sports week every year in summer, in which various indoor and outdoor games are conducted. The college has good connectivity with bus stand and railway station, as it is hardly 1 km away.

BDS - Bachelor of Dental Surgery - Batch of 2028
    3.8
    4Placements3Infrastructure5Faculty3Crowd & Campus Life4Value for Money
A college with good faculty and facilities to learn BDS.
Placements: The admission to the college is done on the basis of NEET conducted by NTA. After quota for MBBS most of the students opt for BDS and the college is currently the 2nd most preferred dental college. Campus placements are not available. After course of 4.5 years internship is done for a year with a stipend of nearly 25000 rupees.
Infrastructure: The college lacks an academic block but the construction is under progress. Currently the college has sufficient clinics and pre-clinical labs for each department. A library with all necessary books is also present. A canteen is run by the workers' association which has special considerations for students and staffs. In terms of sports, it is very much active in the college with participation in all types of games and atheltics. The college donot have a Ladies hostel which is a thing to be considered seriously.
Faculty: The College had the top most rank among the dental colleges in the state in NIRF ranking. The teachers are very well qualified and have years of experience in their respective departments. The course follows the syllabus and curriculum of the Kerala University of Health and Sciences. Exams are conducted yearly whose difficult can be rated as 8 from a scale of 1 to 10. A sessional exam is conducted every 3 month which prepare the students for the final university exam. The college has an average pass percentage of 70.
Other: I chose this course because it was second in line after MBBS which could be alloted to me based on my marks. But the regret I had initially is now very low. The course is tiresome at times but the opportunities and work life is pretty much better. Clinical duties start in the third year itself which is very much helpful to improve the skills and patient interaction by the time a student pass out of the college. The college has other cultural events and fests too. Every year an interdental fest is conducted in any one of the government dental colleges in the state to display their artistical talents. The students in the college have a very good mind of unity which is also to be mentioned.
