Hello,
Indian Engineering Services Exam is conducted by UPSC and follows the same pattern that UPSC follows for civil services exam. Of course, as the name suggests one should be a graduate in engineering in certain branches or M.Sc in some cases. Also, the candidate should be less than 30 years of age which is relaxable in certain cases., but I will not bore you with all this mundane information since it is available in detail on the website of UPSC in downloadable PDF form.Let us turn to the main issue of preparation for the exam. It is considered as one of the toughest exams of UPSC. If successful, one gets the opportunity to join GoI service with possibility to rise to the level of Secretary in the GoI.
The fundamentals remain same. One must be clear in concepts. One must be clear in the English language. One must be adept in personal interviews. The syllabus is quite vast but then one has passed engineering and questions are from that branch only. So, those who have studied well will find it very easy. English and general knowledge can be brushed up. I would advise aspirants to join a good coaching class since these classes prepare you with tricks of answering which is quite valuable. Also, they will conduct mock exams and mock interviews that are a must.
To conclude, I will say that for an engineer, it is not tough but the nuances need to be studied and assimilated.

Hello Kumar,
In absence of national level ranking of all colleges, it's difficult to say which is better than other but your intended college indeed has a reasonable level as per my information.

The most important thing in preparation of IES is the selection of books. My advice will be always going for standard books, not local author's book. If you can then try to have notes of IES preparing coaching as Made easy notes. Which you can get from photocopy shops beside made easy Delhi.
Developing conventional approach is a must for IES. For prelims your vast knowledge matters and objective approach too.
If you can afford then join any available and suitable coaching for this according to your ease. But, it should be done after having rock solid basics.
