As IIT is a brand and as a part of SRM, I can say SRM has a very good placement in field of IT sector. The thing, is you have to develop your skills.

Hi,
B.Des at IITG is very good where every other branch mostly envy the design branch particularly. The reason is their schedule, curriculum, decent packages which is very different from other regular branches.
I dont exactly know the details but heard from other Design mates that their average salary is around 15lakhs! (Cases like people with no placements, very high packages and people opting for higher studies will be present).
Placements: The placements at DoD are on par with the best of departments and institutes. The department has an institute wide best figures of 95+% of placed students, with only 3 of them still searching for opportunities. Last year, the department had a record 100 % record in placements. The slight decline this year can be attributed to the increase in batch strength, which almost doubled compared to last year. The average salary package of the Bachelors currently stands at 9.7 LPA.
EDIT: UPDATE: The current average salary package for the B.Des students has soared to around 15 LPA. This is for the 2011-2014 batch. I will update the exact figures shortly.
Some of the organisations that have recruited from the Department of Design in the recent past include:
Samsung Research Institute, India,
Microsoft India Development Center
Oracle
Flipkart
Samsung (SISO)
Housing.com
Clarice Technologies
Cognizant Technology Solutions
Accenture
Directi
DE Shaw
Infosys
TCS and a lot more.
Higher Study Prospects: Many students of the department have successfully enrolled themselves in well known courses in excellent institutes. Our alumni have received admits from various well known institutes like:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Stanford University
Harvard University
University of Michigan
Georgia Institute of Technology
Carnegie Mellon University
TU Delft and many more.
All the best.

Go for IIT-Guwahati. IIT-Guwahati is ranked 7 while NIT-Trichy is ranked 11th. Also IIT tag is more valuable than NIT tag.

When the comparison is between IIITs and IITs, the war is always in favour of IITs whether it be any branch or stream.
The reason being the quality of students, management of IITs, the large-scale organization of events as well as technical and cultural fests from which students learn a lot.
Although, a IIIT may have a better infrastructure due to its late establishment but is overcome by the vibrant lifestyle of IITs.
Now coming to the placement statistics, the average there at IIT Guwahati is around 18 lakh per annum whereas 12 lakh from IIIT Vadodara.
Also, the highest package ever from IIT Guwahati is around 92 lakh in google whereas is 27 lakh from IIITvadodra creating a huge difference between the two.
Now, one may get into IIIT through Mains and through advance in IIT.
Sincerely, there is a lot of hard work needed for getting into CSE for any of the IITs, NITs and IIIT, but the preference should always be given to the IITs than top NITs and then top IIIT. Although some IIITs are working exceptionally well up to the mark of IITs, which are IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Allahabad.
Thank you. Hope it will help you.

Hello, let me tell you about the placement and internship trend of IIT Guwahati. You won't believe, due to so much hype about the internships abroad, students generally intern abroad in a huge number and it is highest as compared to any other IITs. Even students in the mechanical department with "F" in their courses who got internships abroad. In my honest opinion, since there are a large number of reputed CS companies which come to the campus for internships, probably the good students find it too lucrative to get in them and hence end up not doing foreign internships. Thus, many students end up getting pre- placement offers (PPOs) from the firm that they were interning abroad. The second thing is the placement cell which makes calls to a number of companies for campus recruitment. IIT-G has a very dedicated placement team and every year almost all major companies visit the campus. But the majority of these companies are from the software industry. But this trend is common to all the engineering colleges.
Check out the placement and internship report published by the director of IIT, Guwahati in the link given below:- http://www.iitg.ac.in/pro/sites/default/files/14thConvo_Director's_Report.pdf.
Hope this helps! All the Best!

I would suggest taking CSE only if you are extremely oriented to the branch. At IIT Guwahati, you can also try for a branch change after 1st year. All the best.

If you want to end up with your core subject as mechanical then prefer it first but as per the campus ranking IIT, Kharagpur is better than Guwahati but I'd suggest you to do mechanical from II, Guwahati.
