It was established in 1835 and it was started as a small hospital in 1664. The institute is the third oldest medical college in India established after Ecole de Médecine de Pondichéry and Medical College, Kolkata.The college has the approval of the Medical Council of India. It has been ranked 16 for Medical College by NIRF in 2021. The college has a strong placement record. Overall, it is one of the best colleges in Chennai.
