Finance is a specialized area. Finance specialization gives you an ability to comprehend the nuances of decision making relating to use of financial resources under different scenario relating to organisation, its functioning and use of money in different investment options as well as mitigating risk.
If you do not have any background in finance, to begin with you should get to understand the fundamentals such as financial process (recording, classification and finalized statements) and documents. If you are okay with the fundamentals you could do research on application of tools of finance to different business scenario.
Your summer internship should typically be based on you are of interest in finance such as Mergers, acquisitions, investment advisory services, risk, insurance, etc.
