As far as i know, salary in mechanical is not usually very high keeping the average around Rs.5-6 lakhs a year in NITK, but percentage of placement is descent enough, that is approximately 110 students out of 140. And you gain more pay with experience. Basically a mechanical engineering pass-out won't be that much of a help to the company so they give you less pay till you become experienced and can actually generate significant revenue for the firm. If you work hard and learn fast you can expect you pay to go upto Rs.20-25 lakhs in 4-5 years. But in very rare cases, people get very high package right after the completion of B.Tech.

In terms of teaching, all the branches are same. Any branch you go for will have a combination of conceptual and "mugging up" topics. Amount of each may vary with the branch little bit. For placements there are different criteria. For we know coding jobs pay you high starting salaries. Where as core branches have lower packages comparatively. But more or less it depends on your talent and knowledge. If had to, i would rank branches in decreasing order of starting salaries CSE, IT, ECE, EEE, MECH, rest. And in decreasing order of percentage of placements CSE, (IT - MECH), (ECE - EEE), rest. Of course this is the scenario I am familiar with which may vary with college.

With your rank you can get anything other than CSE in some of the NITs. That depends upon your choice of college but mostly you will be able to get almost every branch in NITs except Surathkal, Trichy, Warangal. In these three colleges CSE MECH and IT may or may not be available depending upon choice of other students whose ranks are above you. Try not to go with the horde. Yes you can. As far as i know, Last year OBC cut off for mechanical was around 8000. I don't think it can go so low as 5000. still keep your options open for other NITs, where you can get easily. Don't fill only 2-3 choices in the counseling website. Make sure you order the choices according to your priority. It should be easy for you to get in. All the best.

Placement is more than 80% which is very high considering many students don't even go for placements. In mechanical only, 115 out of 150 students got placed from campus. average package varies with the branch. Computer Science has the highest average package, followed by IT and other branches. To sum up, if you are even a little good and you don't take placements so lightly, it is easy to get placed. No of visiting companies is very high. all you need to do is just concentrate during placement season. Study a bit and prepare some strategy to approach a placement and you are good to go.
