Online classes for MBBS valid in COVID-19

In the latest notification released by the National Medical Commission, the organisation made it clear that the online theory classes being conducted for MBBS students are valid. NMC clarified that the theory classes for MBBS students will continue to be conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these have to be supplemented by the clinical and practical training whenever the colleges reopen.

The notification was release in clarification to the media reports that stated that such theory classes were not valid and that they were not approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The notification points out that the letter shared in the media reports was the reply sent by MCI to an RTI filed on August 13 to a query related to the conduct of MBBS teaching curriculum  by foreign medical universities through online medium only.

A release from the National Medical Commission to Dean/Principal of all medical colleges/institutions read "Attention of National Medical Commission has been drawn to some media reports that online classes for teaching of MBBS curriculum were not approved by erstwhile MCI. In this regard, it is clarified that in view of Pandemic COVID-19 the Medical Colleges/Institutions in India are conducting online theory classes for MBBS students. Online classes are valid and were approved for teaching during the current Pandemic COVID-19 only. Such online theory classes are required to be supplemented by practical and clinical training as per the current curriculum in all MBBS subjects in the Colleges/Institutions and affiliated hospitals as and when colleges reopen."
