This year, a total of 56 Indian institutes participated in the THE Asia University Rankings 2020 out of which eight made it to the top 100. Among the Indian institutes, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore emerged as the best securing the 36th rank.
Time Higher Education (THE) announced the THE Asia University Rankings 2020. This year, a total of 56 Indian institutes participated in the rankings out of which eight made it to the top 100. Among the Indian institutes, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore emerged as the best securing the 36th rank.
This memorable moment of IISc got recognized by the Education Minister as well. Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal praising institute said, “IISc Bangalore has claimed 36th rank in 'Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2020'. The institute has retained its position as the highest-ranked Indian higher education provider in the list. Congratulations!”
Apart from IISc, IITs also fared well in the ranking list. Six Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) made their way to top 100. Among the IITs, IIT Ropar secured 47th rank, followed by IIT Indore at 55th rank and IIT Kharagpur at 59th rank.
IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay secured the 67th and 69th ranks respectively in the THE Asia University Rankings 2020. The last two Indian institutes in top 100 are IIT Roorkee at 83rd place and Institute of Chemical Technology at 92nd rank.
For the THE Asia University Rankings, institutes are scored on their industry income, international outlook, citations, research, and teaching.
Among the cluster of IITs, IIT Ropar is one of the new generation IITs and is a new entrant to the top 100 list. According to the THE Asia University Rankings 2020, IIT Ropar achieved top scores for citation impact but there is much room for improvement in the four other areas.
One factor where Indian Universities collectively fared poorly is the percentage of international students. Out of the eight institutes in the top 100, four (IIT Ropar, IIT Indore, IIT Kharagpur, and Institute of Chemical Technology) have zero percent international student population. IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IISc have 1% population of International students and IIT Roorkee has 2% population of international students.
IIT Ropar among the top 50 list for the first time
An official statement issued by the IIT Ropar states that IIT Ropar entered the top 50 list for the first time.
This achievement of IIT Ropar got applauded by the Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Twitter. Mr Pokhriyal said, “I am proud to announce that @iitrpr has attained 47th rank in 'Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2020'. The institute was judged on parameters like teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Congratulations!”
The Director of IIT Ropar, Sarit K Das said, “Amid pandemic crisis, a cheering news to share that IIT Ropar has achieved the rank among top 50 institutions in the Times Higher Education Asian University rankings 2020.”
He further added, With the 47th rank, IIT Ropar''s growing influence has echoed its vision of contribution to knowledge, to society and to the nation.
This year, In February, the institute also made a debut in the Emerging Economies University rankings 2020, being ranked 63rd, sharing the rank with IIT Madras, said the statement.
