Supreme Court Judge BR Gavai has said that India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER) doesn't need foreign faculty to compete with international law schools.

IIULER in Goa doesn't need foreign faculty, says SC Judge BR Gavai

Bar Council of India (BCI) Trust-Pearl First's initiative the India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER) was unveiled yesterday in Goa.

Supreme Court Judge BR Gavai has said that he disagrees with the concept of the Bar Council of India (BCI) to have some foreign faculty and foreign vice-chancellor to compete with international law schools. During the inaugural programme yesterday, he said BCI needs to relook at it, as reported by TOI.

Is there any dearth of talent in India, asks BR Gavai

He said, "I have some disagreement with the fetish for foreign faculties. Is there a dearth of talent in India?"

"We have had Dr B Ambedkar, Mahatama Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru, Vallabhai Patel who are all from law faculty. They gave up their lucrative practices and contributed to the nation. Sir Hari Singh Gaur from Nagpur was such an eminent lawyer that the clients from South Africa and Britain were engaging him before the Privy Council" he said.

SC Judge Surya Kant emphasised the requirement to provide practical training to law students. "In India, law professors are not allowed to practice and they limit their exposure only to the domain of theory. In this situation, unless professors have been practitioners before becoming academia, it is difficult to bring practice and theory together in the classroom," he said.
