FMGE Exam: Full form, Dates, Fees, Eligibility, Results
Conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE), FMGE exam is a mandatory examination required to be undertaken by all Indian citizens or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders who have pursued their medical education abroad and plan to practice in India by obtaining a provisional or permanent registration with National Medical Commission (NMC) or any State Medical Council.
What is FMGE Exam?
The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination more commonly referred to as FMGE exam is a medical licensing examination in India. It is a screening test which came into being through Screening Test Regulations, 2002. The National Board of Examination (NBE) is the conducting body of FMGE exam. This medical licensing exam is mandatory to be undertaken by all Indian citizens or Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders who have studied MBBS out of India and plan to practice in India by obtaining a provisional or permanent registration with the National Medical Commission.
To appear for FMGE, candidates should hold the provisional pass certificate/degree certificate of primary medical qualification and the certificate of eligibility (if required). Those who qualify for the exam obtain a screening test pass certificate which the NBEMS awards once the biometric/Face ID and relevant documents verification have been completed.

FMGE Exam Dates
As mentioned earlier, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is held twice a year in June and December months. The National Board of Examination will conduct the FMGE December 2024 session on January 12, 2025. Candidates can check the official website of the National Board of Examination.

Candidates who are citizens of India or Overseas Citizens of India and possess a primary medical qualification, which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned, to be a recognized qualification for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country in which the institution awarding the said qualification is situated, can apply for FMGE provided that the result of final examination for the said primary medical qualification has been declared on or before the prescribed cut-off date for a particular session of FMG Examination.
National Board of Examination - the conducting body of the FMGE has laid down the following eligibility guidelines for students wanting to appear for the MCI FMGE test.
- The candidate is required to be a citizen of India or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
- The candidate must possess a primary medical qualification which is equivalent to an MBBS degree from the country where the university awarding the degree is located.
- The candidate must have completed his MBBS degree (primary qualification) before appearing for the FMGE test.
FMGE Exam Application Process
Candidates who qualify for the above-mentioned eligibility criteria are required to register for the FMGE test on the official National Board of Examination website. Here is the step by step process to complete the FMGE exam registration form.
- Visit the official website of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Science
- There you will find the "FMGE Exam" in the Examination sections.
- You will find an active link for the FMGE June/December session exam.
- Follow the instructions mentioned on-screen and fill up the information asked there.
- Cross-verify the details before submission.
- At last, pay the FMGE exam application fee by using a credit or debit card.
Note: It is also mandatory to qualify for the final exam for the Primary Medical Qualification i.e. MBBS or Equivalent degree on/before the given date.
FMGE Exam Fees
Candidates who are appearing for the examination need to pay a non-refundable FMGE registration fee of INR 6,195 (Including GST). Candidates can pay the application fee by using credit/debit cards of Indian banks through the payment gateway. No other mode of payment is accepted.

FMGE Exam Pattern
Conducted by NBE – the FMGE examination is an online examination that requires candidates to solve 300 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections, i.e. Part A and Part B. Candidates would be given 150 minutes to solve each section. Those appearing for the exam will be given a break between the two marks. All the questions in the FMGE question paper will carry equal weight. One mark would be awarded for every correct answer and no negative marking for an incorrect entry. According to the exam pattern of FMGE, a candidate needs to score at least 50% marks in the examination to qualify. The paper is set in English language only.
FMGE Exam Syllabus
Designed by the Medical Council of India, the FMGE syllabus compasses all the topics that were covered during the undergraduate medical degree course. The FMGE exam syllabus can be broadly divided into the following subjects: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Radio-Diagnosis, Radiotherapy, Pediatrics, Medicine, Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, Psychiatry, Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Community Medicine.
FMGE 2024 Results
The National Board of Examination released the FMGE 2024 June Results on 16 July 2024. Candidates who have the credentials like roll number, name, and Email ID can download their scorecard. However, the FMGE results 2024 PDF is easily available on the official website of NBE.
In the official announcement by NBE, the roll number of candidates, qualifying status (Pass/Fail), and score obtained out of 300 are mentioned. All the successful aspirants can get the certificate from the National Medical Commission.
FMGE Passing Marks
To pass the exam, candidates have to score a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 in the examination. Students can check their results on the NBEMS website. Provision for re-totalling/reevaluation does not exist.
FMGE Exam Day Guidelines
Candidates appearing for the MCI FMGE test must follow the guidelines below.
- Candidates would be required to download the FMGE Admit Card and mandatorily carry the same on the day of the exam. Without it, entry is prohibited.
- Candidates are required to bring along with them a valid, original, and non-expired government-approved photo ID proof (PAN card, driving license, voter ID, Aadhar card, and passport).
- Candidates are required to reach the examination centre on or before the reporting time mentioned on the admit card.

Candidates cannot take their friends or relatives to the examination centre premises.

Checking will be done with thermo guns for COVID-19 infection at the entry point.

Identity checks will be carried out at the exam venue to make sure that only the registered candidates are appearing for the exam.
Things Not Allowed Inside the Examination Hall
- Stationery items like pens, writing pads, notes, erasers, calculators, etc.
- Electronic devices like cell phones, earphones, power banks, Bluetooth devices, wristwatches, etc.
- Ornaments like chains, rings, earrings, badges, nose-pin, necklaces, etc.
- Wallets, handbags, caps, belts, goggles, etc.
- Eatable items
The FMGE results are announced online by its conducting body, the National Board of Examination (NBE). The result simply states whether the candidate has cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination or not. Once available, candidates can download their MCI FMGE results in PDF format from the official website of NBE.
Candidates who successfully qualify for the MCI FMGE examination can collect their FMGE Pass Certificates in person from the office of the NBE. They would be required to produce the same to the Medical Council of India, who would then issue them their registration certificate, making them eligible to practice in India. Once released, candidates can check their respective results at the NBEMS website - natboard.edu.in and nbe.edu.in.
