Australia emerging as a favourite study abroad destination among Indian aspirants
World-class education, safe and secure environment and favourable immigration policies have persuaded Indian students to choose Australia as their preferred destination for pursuing higher education. Diverse initiatives by the Australian government and relaxed visa rules for international students, post-study has resulted in the number of Indian students pursuing higher studies in Australia touching a record high. These facts are declared by the high commission of Australia, New Delhi. The positive approach of the Australian government towards international students is a major factor contributing to Indian students choosing it over traditional favourites like the US and the UK.
According to the high commission, the number of Indian students studying in Australian institutions in the year 2021 was 52,000, which was 21% less as compared to the enrollment numbers for the year 2020. Around 48% of the total students who went abroad to pursue their high studies got admission in Australia. Further, the number of Indian students granted visa by the Australian Department of Home Affairs saw a fall of 18.2% (52,050 students) in the financial year 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Apart from this, a recent study conducted by Pearson for PTE Academic, the computer-based test of English proficiency for immigration and study abroad has revealed that Australia has emerged as the most preferred destinations amongst the PTE test takers in India. This study has brought to light some interesting facts about Indian students aspiring to study overseas. It also revealed that aspirants from Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat have showcased the strongest desire to pursue higher studies in an Australian institution. Also, mere 3.5% of these students wanted to pursue graduate courses, whereas 93% of them want to apply for postgraduate courses.

Further, the study revealed that apart from traditional Engineering and IT courses, Business Management and Accountancy have emerged as the preferred field of study for the students as well. A significant number of students are opting for Finance and Health & Life Sciences too. Adding to it, the English language proficiency test conducted by PTE Academic is accepted by 100% universities in New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. Thousands of academic programmes in New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Canada, Singapore, the USA and the UK accept the test scores of PTE Academic.
Post Donald trump, the effect is more pronounced in the USA. Whereas the UK has already been losing charm in last 3-4 years primarily because post work visa rules are getting tougher. The recent Brexit also has had a minor effect. Generally, whichever countries have a conservative government they tighten the policies for international students work visa to appeal to local voters and hence the demand for that country starts to decline. The reverse happens in case of liberal government (such as Canada) which ease policies and end up welcoming more international students.
Queensland, Canberra, New South Wales, Deakin, and Bond are some of the universities which are highly popular amongst Indian students. With continuing visa restrictions in the US and the UK, one can say that this trend is here to stay.
