Australia is a favourite overseas destination for Indian students to pursue higher studies. Every year, nearly one lakh Indian students pursue higher studies in Australia. However, in 2023, the Australian government tightened the immigration rules for international students to avoid visa hop which has also affected Indian students.

The Australian government also made the English language tests stringent. Government data reveals that in 2022, 1,00,009 Indian students were present in Australia. There were 73,808 Indian students in Australia in 2019, 33629 in 2020 and 8,950 in 2021. The pandemic from 2020 to 2021 resulted in a decreased number of Indian students in Australia.

As per reports, there is a surge in visa rejections in Australian universities. the University of Wollongong and La Trobe University face accusations of withdrawing offers, but both deny these claims. Deakin University assures it is actively conducting admissions for the academic year 2024, as reported by Newstrack.

The experts are anticipating a decline in migrant intake, affecting international students. The Indian foreign ministry said a record number of Indians surrendered their passports last year, with most settling in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. But this might change soon due to recent changes in the visa restrictions by these countries, as reported by Wionews.








According to the Indian government data, the largest number of Indians who gave up Indian citizenship in 2021 settled in the United States (78,284), Australia (23,533), Canada (21,597), and the UK (14,637).
