Indian Student Shot Dead In Canada; Family Seeks Justice

After many tragic death reports of Indian students coming from the USA this year, now the latest one comes from another foreign land - Canada. As per reports, a 24-year-old student from Haryana identified as Chirag Antil was shot dead by unknown miscreants in Canada's Vancouver.

"The incident happened at 11 pm (Vancouver time) on April 12. Chirag was found dead inside a car in the area after residents heard sounds of gunshots. So far, no arrests have been made and an investigation was on," said the statement by Vancouver Police.

The family of the deceased student has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for justice and to make arrangements for bringing his body back home for last rites.

The National President of National Students' Union of India, Varun Choudhary has urged the Ministry of External Affairs to closely monitor the progress of the investigation and ensure that justice is swiftly served.

Indian student's death in Canada details

As per Chirag Antil's brother Ronit, he spoke to his brother on the morning of April 12 and his brother looked happy before he was shot dead.

"We have continuously spoken over the phone with the policeman who gave us this news. But we were not told anything as to how this incident happened. We appeal to PM Modi and Jaishankar to ensure justice as soon as possible," he said, as reported by India Today.

Chirag went to Canada in the year 2022 and recently completed his MBA. He was on a work visa in a manpower security agency.

Recently, Canada's immigration Minister Marc Miller set a limit of 606,000 study permit applications for international students for 2024. This will have a major impact on Indians, as students from India form a major chunk of international students in Canada.
