University of Tennessee in USA: Nine students have earned a collective $32,000 in Gilman Scholarship awards to support their studies abroad. The program is named after Benjamin Gilman, who served from 1973 to 2003 in the House of Representatives and for many years on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Gilman offers a tremendous opportunity for more students from UT to enhance their educations through the power of study abroad. We offer a huge congratulations to these students, each of whom dedicated considerable time and effort to their applications, and wish them an extraordinary experience in their chosen countries," said Meredith Malburne-Wade, director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.

About Gilman Scholarships

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers students with limited financial means an opportunity to study or intern abroad. The scholarship aims to develop a generation of future American leaders who have the international networks and skills to advance U.S. national security and economic prosperity and represent the rich diversity of the nation.

To be eligible for the Gilman Program, the applicants must have received a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.

“I am so thankful to have been chosen as a Gilman Scholar to fully fund my first time studying abroad. As someone who wishes to become fluent in French, I hope to take in this experience as much as I can and improve my language skills while showing my Volunteer spirit through working with the local Bordeaux community," said Sandy Sunshine Cooper.

“The Gilman Scholarship not only helps me get closer to realizing my goals, but it also will encourage me to share my experiences in Japan with other students here at UT. I look forward to the conversations I will have,” said Custalow.
