Scholarship Overview

International Fellowships offered by AAUW have been in existence since 1917. These are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not the U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Graduate as well as postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported under this scholarship, and who wish to return to their home country in order to pursue a professional career. Note that a limited number of awards are available for study outside the U.S. to women who are members of Graduate Women International.

By the time of the application, the applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree. Apart from this, applicants must have also applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application. The recipients of AAUW International Fellowships are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to girls and women. The recipients return to their home countries to eventually become leaders in academic, business, government, community activism, the arts or scientific fields.

Award Amount of International Fellowships of AAUW

  • Master’s / first professional degree: $20,000
  • Doctoral: $25,000
  • Postdoctoral: $50,000
  • International Fellowships funds are available for educational expenses, living expenses, dependent child care, and travel to professional meetings, conferences or seminars that do not exceed 10% of the fellowship total
  • Note that the International Fellowships funds are not available for the purchase of equipment, research assistants, indirect costs, publication costs, previous expenditures, deficits or repayment of loans, institutional (overhead) costs, tuition for dependent’s education, grants-in-aid for less than a full academic year or travel grants, travel from or to fellow’s home country, travel to or from the fellow’s research location, if abroad

Selection Criteria and Application Review of International Fellowships of AAUW

Once a year, the panel meets to review the applications for funding. The recommendations by the panel are subject to final approval by AAUW. The fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis as per the funds available in a given fiscal year. The awards are based on the criteria outlined here:

  • Applicants must be residing in their home country at the time of application, from developing / emerging countries, or from an underrepresented group in any region, shall receive special consideration
  • Academic and / or professional qualifications
  • Position on return to home country
  • Demonstrated a commitment to the development of women and girls in their home country
  • Feasibility and quality of the proposed plan of study or research
  • Proposed time schedule
  • Motivation for research or graduate study
  • Financial need
  • Demonstrated evidence of prior community and / or civic sense in the home country
  • Country’s need for the specialized knowledge or skill of the applicant

  • Master’s/first professional degree fellowships are intended for master’s or professional degree-level programs such as J.D., M.F.A., L.L.M., M.Arch., or medical degrees such as M.D., D.D.S., etc.
  • Doctoral fellowships are intended for doctorate degrees classified as research degrees, such as Ph.D. or Ed.D.

Eligibility

  • To be eligible for an International Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Have citizenship in a country other than the U.S. or possession of a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the U.S. Women who are currently, or expect to be during the fellowship year, a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen with the U.S. and another country are not eligible.
    • Hold an academic degree (earned in the U.S. or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by the application deadline. 
  • Must be proficient in English with the TOEFL test-
    • Minimum score acceptable -  79 for Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)
    • IELTS - 6.5

  • Provide three recommenders who are professors or professional colleagues well acquainted with you, your work, and your academic background, in striving towards scholarly pursuits. When possible, recommenders should be professors or professional colleagues in the applicant’s home country who can speak about the applicant’s qualifications and about the country’s need for the specialized skill or knowledge she plans to acquire with her proposed study or research
