Ahlul-Bayt Centre Human Rights and Social Justice Small Firm or Sole Practitioner Fellowship is aimed at providing support to outstanding students entering or enrolled in the Honours BSocSc in Political Science and Juris Doctor (JD) from University of Ottawa in Canada. Eligibility

  • The applicant must:
    • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, a person with the protected/refugee status or an international student;
    • be registered in the first or second year (or third year of a four-year program) of a JD or joint JD program in the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section of the University of Ottawa;
    • have a CGPA of at least 5.0; and
    • take part in a summer fellowship for a student who will work with a local practitioner in a small firm environment to further issues of human rights and social justice (the fellowship must last for no less than ten weeks of part-time work between May 1st and August 31st, for a total of at least 200 hours)

  • Application must be made to the Student Services Office, Common Law Section, and should include:
    • a completed application form, located under the Fellowship and Travel Bursary Section of the Source Document Library;
    • a letter of application (two pages maximum) detailing:- the applicant's interest in the Fellowship Program and the reasons for applying;- how the program relates to future career goals;- relevant experience and academic course work; and- at least two potential placements that the candidate would be interested in pursuing and the nature of the works that the candidate might do for the host organization.
    • a résumé (2 pages maximum) with an emphasis on how your experience relates to your proposed placement;
    • law school transcripts (photocopies of official transcripts or an unofficial transcript through uoZone which include GPA information are sufficient); and 
    • two reference letters: one employment and one academic reference (if the academic reference is a professor from the uOttawa Faculty of Law, a letter is not required, simply list the name and contact information of the referee without attaching a letter).
