Scholarship Overview

Amsterdam Merit Scholarships are offered at University of Amsterdam to those international students who are pursuing a Masters Degree. This is a Merit Based Scholarship, which is provided to only maximum number of students, depending on the University student. Amount for Amsterdam Merit Scholarships is not mentioned by the University of Amsterdam. Also, the Amsterdam Merit Scholarships is a one time tuition,living reducing scholarship, offered in the first year of Masters Degree only. Applications for Amsterdam Merit Scholarships at University of Amsterdam are filed separately. To be considered for this award, applicants must have a Bachelor degree. To be eligible for this award, international students must take English proficiency tests such as TOEFL and IELTS. Students will require the following documentation to apply for the scholarship: CV. Along with the Amsterdam Merit Scholarships application. The eligibility of the students to qualify for Amsterdam Merit Scholarships would solely depend on the applicant’s admission to University of Amsterdam Masters Degree, his/her aptitude for an overall contribution towards University of Amsterdam community and of course the academic achievements.

• The scholarship covering the tuition fee and part of the living expenses (the exact amount will be announced as soon as possible) for one academic year with the possibility of an extension for a second year (for two-year Master’s programs)
• For a two-year master's program students who are awarded an AMS are expected to complete their first year of study with good results (at least 40 ECTS) in order to receive the scholarship for the second year as well

Eligibility

Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship should: 

• Not have the nationality of one of the countries of the EU/EEA or Suisse
• Not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
• Not be eligible to pay the reduced tuition fee rate for EEA students at the UvA
• Not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS
• Must have submitted a complete application to one of the MSc programmes (see the website of the MSc program for the application and admission procedure)
• Must have been (or will be) admitted for the first time to one of the MSc programs at the UvA
• Must have completed their previous academic program no longer than 3 years ago

In addition to the admission requirements of the Master's program, eligible candidates are selected on the basis of their academic excellence and promise in the proposed field as evidenced by: 

• The candidate’s academic records. Students belonging to the top 10% of graduates from their class can apply. This generally means an overall GPA equivalent to:
  • 3.5 (American system, 4-point scale)
  • 1st class honors/ upper-division (British system)
  • 8+ (Dutch EC-system, 10-point scale)
• The academic quality of the educational institute where the (under)graduate degree has been (or will be) obtained

English language Proficiency:

• TOEFL: Overall score of 100, with a minimum score of 22 in each of the four components
• IELTS: Overall score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four components
