Scholarship Overview

The University of New Mexico offers the International Amigo Scholarship. Every year, the International Students Office of The University of New Mexico awards scholarships to degree-seeking students who have specified financial needs. Note that a large portion of the scholarship funds come from International student tuition. International Amigo Scholarship is applicable for Masters Degree. The award is applicable for the courses like Master of Science in Information Systems and Assurance,Civil Engineering, MS,Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME),Master of Science (M.S.) in Computer Engineering,MS in Chemical Engineering,Master of Science in Computer Science,Master of Science in Electrical Engineering,Master of Architecture. If we consider the amount of the International Amigo Scholarship, then it varies each semester. The applicants should review the scholarship application in order to fully understand the availability and amount for that particular semester. To qualify for the award, candidates must have completed the Bachelor degree and passed the 12th grade. Foreign students wishing to apply for this scholarship must take English proficiency exams such as TOEFL, IELTS and PTE. Students must submit the following documentation to be considered for the scholarship: LOR and CV.

Eligibility

Applicants must have:

  • A previous university minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • The nomination of the graduate program to which the applicant is applying
  • Admission to a full-time, in-person graduate degree program (Online only programs are not eligible.)
  • Non-immigrant visa status (Preference is given to student visa holders- F1, J1)
  • No UNM research, teaching, or project assistantship
  • No previous attendance at UNM in the current application degree level
  • Applicants must satisfy the English language proficiency requirement with one of the following tests:
    • IELTS:  6.5
    • TOEFL: 79
    • PTE: 53

Additional Information

Renewal Eligibility:

  • The scholarship may be renewed for up to two years for master's degree students
  • Students must complete 9 graduate-level credit hours each semester and obtain a minimum 3.0 GPA each semester. As a graduate-level scholarship, students are expected to enroll in graduate-level course work for the duration of the scholarship
  • Courses with grades of W, WP, WF, WNC, NC, I Audit, and NR will not be counted toward the total completed semester hours.
  • Students who fail to meet the requirements will lose the scholarship
  • Additionally, students who accept an assistantship during their graduate study at UNM will forfeit the International Amigo Scholarship
