Scholarship Overview

Major Entrance Scholarships are offered at McGill University to those international students who are pursuing a Bachelors Degree. This is a Merit Based Scholarship, which is provided to only maximum number of students, depending on the University. Major Entrance Scholarships are valued at CAD 10000 for maximum number of students, depending on the University who qualify from McGill University. Also, the Major Entrance Scholarships helps students in reducing tuition on a yearly basis, offered in the first year of Bachelors Degree only. Applications for Major Entrance Scholarships at McGill University are filed separately. To be eligible for this scholarship students must have appeared for 12th grade. To be eligible for this award, international students must take English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS and PTE. As part of the selection process, students must attend an interview. Students will require the following documentation to apply for the scholarship: LOR. Along with the Major Entrance Scholarships application. The eligibility of the students to qualify for Major Entrance Scholarships would solely depend on the applicant’s admission to McGill University Bachelors Degree, his/her aptitude for an overall contribution towards McGill University community and of course the academic achievements.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirements are overall averages and prerequisite subject requirements normally between 75% to 87% on in-progress grades and depending on the program applied to
  • Prerequisites: 
    • For B.Eng. in Mechanical engineering/Chemical Engineering/Civil engineering/Computer Engineering/Electrical Engineering:- Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics in Class 11 and 12 (Biology cannot be used as a prerequisite)
    • For B.Sc. Honours in Computer Science/BSc in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences:- Mathematics, and two of biology, chemistry or physics in Class 11 and 12
    • B.Com with Major in Marketing:- Mathematics in Class 11 and 12; business mathematics is acceptable
  • IB Diploma: 41 subject points (not including bonus points) on predicted or final grades
  • English Language Proof:
    • IELTS: 6.5 with a minimum 6.0 in each component
    • TOEFL: 90 with a minimum score of 21 in each component
    • PTE: 65 with Individual component scores of 60 or better
  • Must show academic achievement and outstanding leadership in school or community activities
  • An interview may be conducted of finalist candidates

Required Documents:

  • Two letters of reference: One academic and one activity-related letter of reference. Letters should be typed on letterhead stationery, duly signed, and converted to PDF, then submitted directly by the referees to scholarships@mcgill.ca.
  • Ranking/Signed statement: A signed statement from the school indicating the size of class and student's class rank, if the school provides such information. All documents should be provided on the school letterhead.
  • Academic Transcripts

  • Applicants must submit a separate application soon after submitting an application for admission
  • After submitting the admission application applicants will receive an email acknowledging the application
  • Then, Log on to Minerva and go to Applicant > Apply for Major Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship. Here is a sample preview of the application form (PDF)
  • Applicants will be prompted to provide specific information which may include some or all of the following:
    • A factual list of student's school activities and community/volunteer involvement for the last three academic years (including athletic/artistic and other activities)
    • A general essay either on a contemporary or historical figure that influenced/inspired the student or on a memorable event/experience which provided the student with a new outlook on life
    • A one-page letter of reference that the student has written – for himself/herself– in the third person
