Scholarship Overview

  • The Ravi Sankaran Fellowship Program is an initiative of the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation
  • This is offered in the memory of Ornithologist Dr. Ravi Shankaran to students who have interests in carrying out graduate study and research work on wildlife in abroad universities and aim to work towards conservation of biodiversity of INDIA
  • Over the last three decades, more than 300 scholars have benefited from these scholarships
  • The Program funds three major activities:
    • A Master’s degree at a university abroad
    • An internship with an organization abroad
    • Small Grants for short conservation research or implementation project within India

  • For Master's degree courses, the fellowship provides the amount for the following components:
    • Course Fees
    • Stipend
    • Internship fees (if any)
    • To-and-fro international travel
    • Project expenses (not exceeding Rs 2 lakh per year in total).

Eligibility

  • The Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarships are open to all Indian citizens who have been continuously resident in India for the past six months, at the time of making the scholarship application
  • Applicants must hold a Bachelors degree in any subject, and should normally be below 30 years of age in the year of application
  • Applicants are expected to hold a first-class degree or equivalent from a recognized university/institution in India
  • Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to conservation and strongly justify how the fellowship will further conservation in India
  • Interview-
    • Shortlisted candidates will get invited for the interview
    • Interviews for Masters and Internship applicants usually take place in Mumbai or Delhi at the end of May or early June
    • No interviews will be conducted for Small Grants applications
  • The Fellowship particularly seeks young applicants with bold and unconventional ideas for tackling conservation problems
  • Small Grant applicants must also submit a project proposal with budget

  • LORs- Two letters of reference are mandatory, one of those must be from an academic referee. The referees must send the letters of reference in confidence to the Foundation directly
  • Fellowship recipients must submit a detailed Interim Report every year, and a Final Report at the end of their term
  • Additional Documents:
    • Internship applicants must enclose a letter of acceptance/admission from the host institution
    • Photograph is required
  • Application Process:

Additional Information

  • The Program funds three major activities:
    (a) A Master’s degree at a university abroad-at an International University for 1-2 years in a reputed academic program in ecology or conservation (stipend, course fees, one-way international travel)
    (b) Internship with a International Conservation Organisation-Funds one or two recipients to carry out an internship of 6 weeks to 1 year with a university research group, NGO, government agency, or other organisation, known for its work in conservation science and practice in a country other than India (stipend, internship fees (if any), to-and-fro international travel (with a cap of USD 1,500 for travel)
    (c) Small Grants for a short conservation research or implementation project within India-The Program will fund up to 5 recipients to carry out an initial project of up to 1 yr that is expected to lead to a longer-term conservation science and/or implementation project (not exceeding Rs 2 lakh per year in total)
