Scholarship Overview

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the oldest scholarship programmes that allow outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. It is a fully funded and full-time postgraduate award. This scholarship covers Oxford University’s course fees and an annual stipend. For the 2023/24 academic year, the stipend is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month) from which Scholars pay all living expenses, including accommodation. Upon arrival at Oxford University, the scholars receive a settling-in allowance. Those scholars who will go into the second course of study shall again receive assistance for covering the fee for visa renewal and further application for IHS.

 

In order to apply for Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford University, applicants must be citizens of India. They must also have an Indian passport or equivalent proof of citizenship. Note that the PIO or OCI cardholders do not fulfill the Indian citizenship criteria for this purpose. Apart from this, applicants must have done a formal study at an educational institute in India for a minimum of 4 out of the last 10 years. Also, they must have either completed a school leaving exam at an Indian school (10th or 12th or equivalent) or must be in the final year of, or have completed an undergraduate degree at an Indian university. The age criterion is also there for applicants, so go through it before applying.

   

Selection Criteria for Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford University

The selection for Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford University is done without giving any importance to the applicant’s gender, marital status, race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, caste, social background or disability. Rhodes Scholarship is made for young people of outstanding intellect, leadership, character, and commitment to service. After the selection for Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford University, the Rhodes Trust shall cover the fee required to apply to study at the university. The trust shall also cover the fee for a student visa and the associated International Health Surcharge (IHS). Apart from these, two economy class flights at the beginning and end of studies in Oxford are also covered by the Rhodes Trust. Some of the constituencies included under the Rhodes Scholarship are Bermuda, Canada, Australia, China, India, Kenya, Germany, Pakistan, the United States, etc. Each year, a total of 5 Rhodes scholarships are available each year for India. It was in 1947 when the first Indian Rhodes Scholars took up residence at Oxford University. Life at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar

After being selected for Rhodes Scholarship for Oxford University, students will automatically become a part of a vibrant and unique international community of Rhodes Scholars. By being a member of the community, students will be exposed to varied thinking on different issues. Students will also have a Rhodes House where seminars and forums with world-leading experts and guests are held. Here, at the Rhodes House, there are study spaces, libraries, and social events where scholars can meet other fellow scholars. Also, at the Rhodes House, scholars also attend social events like Rhodes Ball and Coming Up Dinner.

Eligibility

  • Academic achievement:  Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree (usually a Bachelor’s), and must have an academic background and grade that - at a minimum - meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of their chosen course at the University of Oxford. Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have: A First Class Honours Degree
  • Rhodes Criteria:
    • Applicant must be a citizen of India, holding an Indian passport, or equivalent proof of citizenship; PIO or OCI cardholders are not eligible
    • Applicant must have undertaken formal study at an educational institution in India for a minimum of 4 of the last 10 years, and have either (i) completed a school-leaving exam (10th or 12th standard) at a school in India, or (ii) have received, or be in the final year of, an undergraduate degree at a university in India
  • MBA admission criteria:
    • IELTS: 7.5 with a min score of 7.0 in each component
    • GMAT/ GRE: 
      • GMAT scores of 650 or above are considered competitive
      • A GRE verbal score of 160 and a quantitative score of 160 is considered competitive
    • Work Experience: Applicants should have at least two years of previous full-time work experience
    • Interview: It is part of both the admission and scholarship process
    • Applicants with a full-time degree-level course of a minimum of nine months, at a recognized institution, where the medium of instruction and assessment was entirely in English can be exempted from the English proficiency exam at the discretion of the University

  • A signed personal statement of no more than 1,000 words:
    • Addresses applicants general interests and activities and what he/she plan to do with their life once they have completed their studies
    • Discusses applicant's aims and priorities and the contribution they had made and would like to make to their home country and the region
    • Indicates the course of study and degree they wish to follow at Oxford
    • Demonstrates that applicants are able to meet the requirements of the specific course they have chosen
  • LOR: Applicants will need to provide a list of six people (referees), who are willing to submit references on their behalf:
    • Provide email addresses of all the referees
    • At least three of the referees should be academics who had taught the candidate in undergraduate studies and who can comment in detail on  their academic ability and how well they think the candidate would fare at Oxford
    • Additional referees should testify to the applicant's character and/or his/ her involvement in extra-curricular/service or leadership activities. These referees should be teachers or other persons who are able to comment critically on whether the candidate fulfils the extra-curricular, non-academic requirements of the Scholarship and who can speak in detail to their character.
    • Referees must not be personal friends, relations, or contemporaries
