Scholarship Overview

Incepted in 2011, the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences Indian Scholarship at The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, is maintained by the School of Chemistry & Molecular Biosciences, Faculty of Science, The University Queensland. Indian students who will be pursuing a full-time course at The University of Queensland and who meet the set criteria for selection can apply for this scholarship. This is a postgraduate coursework scholarship for the Master of Biotechnology, Master of Molecular Biology or Master of Bioinformatics programs. It covers 25% of tuition fees, student services & amenities fees. Every semester (8 per year), a maximum of four scholarships will be awarded. Half of these are reserved for those applying for the Master of Biotechnology program. Any late fees or remaining tuition fees will have to be deposited by those receiving the scholarship. Also, those applying for this should begin pursuing their education in the semester stated in the offer letter.

In order to meet the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences Indian Scholarship eligibility criteria, students should possess a GPA of atleast 80% over seven semesters of UG studies or 75% over eight semesters at an institution of higher education in India. The institution should rank 1 or 2 as per the Australian Government’s National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR). They should also be holding a student visa. Those already studying at The University of Queensland cannot apply for this scholarship.

The selection of the students for this scholarship is made on the basis of their academic achievements in UG studies, personal qualities, interest displayed in pursuing the course and other elements which may be considered important by the selection committee.   • The value of the Scholarship is 25% of the tuition fees and 100% of the Student Services and Amenities Fee payable for the minimum number of units required to complete the program by the student who is awarded the Scholarship, for each semester for which it is held

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • submit an application to the Head, by the closing date for applications
  • be a citizen of India
  • have achieved a GPA (or overseas equivalent) of 80% over 7 semesters of undergraduate studies or 75% over 8 semesters of undergraduate studies at a higher education institution in India
  • be able to commence as an international student (in accordance with the University's Fee Policy) in Australia on a student visa

Preference will be given to following candidates:

  • For the selection process, the Head must establish a selection committee, comprising a minimum of three directors of postgraduate coursework programs administered by the School of Chemistry & Molecular Biosciences. The Head will appoint a chairperson from those appointed to the selection committee
  • The Scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by –
    • academic achievement in undergraduate studies; and
    • strength of interest demonstrated in the relevant field of postgraduate coursework study; and
    • personal qualities, including leadership potential; and 
    • any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's future professional success in the relevant field of postgraduate coursework study
    • the selection committee will rank the top six applicants, and the Associate Dean (Academic) will then select the successful candidate(s)

Additional Information

Conditions for Scholarship:

  1. The recipient may hold the Scholarship for the Minimum Completion Time of the Approved Program, subject to the recipient – 
    • continuing to be enrolled full-time in the Approved Program, unless otherwise exempted by the Head; and 
    • achieving a GPA of at least 4 for each semester of study in which the recipient holds the Scholarship; and
    • resuming study after an approved interruption of up to 1 year, as approved by the Head; and
    • being eligible to continue to hold a student visa
  2. If the recipient fails to satisfy rule 1, the student must show cause to the Associate Dean (Academic) why the Scholarship should not be cancelled
  3. The recipient may be required by the Associate Dean (Academic) to pay the full tuition fee of any course that is repeated
  4. In this rule - Minimum Completion Time means the minimum period of time it would take a student to complete the remainder of the program in which the recipient is enrolled when the recipient is awarded the Scholarship
