Eligibility

  • Applicants must be first-entry undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Toronto
  • Applicants from any discipline or major, and from any campus, are encouraged to apply
  • UTSC students cannot submit the same assignment to both the UTL Undergraduate Research Prize and the UTSC Undergraduate Research Prize
  • Assignments or research projects completed for course work at the University of Toronto during Summer 2023, Fall 2023, or Winter 2024 are eligible for submission.

Students are judged on their use of information sources for a course assignment

The judging panel will evaluate each project based on:

  • where the students look for information sources

  • what resources and/or services (library or information-related) the students use during the research or information-seeking process

  • how the students evaluate and select the information sources incorporated in the assignment/project

The focus of the prize is based on effective and innovative searching, and the use of information sources. The reflective statement is key to a strong and successful application, and will hold the most weight with judges, rather than the research assignment.

Application Process for this scholarship

Documents Required:

  • A copy of an assignment, including a bibliography

Application process:

  • Students need to fill out the application form to apply for the University of Toronto Libraries Undergraduate Research Prize
  • Once they have completed this web form, they will receive an email prompting them to submit the following documents
    • A reflective statement describing the effective and innovative research process and use of research materials (750-1000 words). Please refer to the evaluation rubric that will be used to judge submissions
    • A copy of the submitted assignment, including the bibliography
  • Please send these files as two (2) separate documents. They should be formatted as .doc, .docx, or .pdf files
  • If the research assignment cannot be submitted in an electronic format (e.g. a video, music performance, artwork) email the prize committee at libprize@utoronto.ca
  • After the completion of the form, the student's instructor will be notified by email to submit a letter of support
