Candidates who plan to visit Australia for work or study are in for a surprise as Visa Fees surge northwards. The Department of Home Affairs, Government of Australia reviews its Visa Application Charges (VAC) twice in a calendar year and the changes are effective from January 1 and July 1 of the same year. Keeping to its ritual, the Government of Australia has revised its Visa Application Charges and implemented other important amendments which have come to effect from July 1, 2018.
Hike in Visa Application Charges (VAC) w.e.f July 1, 2018
The Government of Australia plans to generate over $410 Million Dollars over a period of five years from 2017-2021. Keeping this insight, the Department of Home Affairs, Government of Australia, has revised the Visa Application Charges (VAC) with effect from July 1, 2018. Candidates who are looking to apply for Visa on or after July 1, 2018, are requested to visit the official website to verify the Visa Fees before going ahead with their application. Applicants seeking to visit Australia should note that Australian Visa Application Centers and Australian High Commissions across India will only accept and consider applications with the revised visa application fee.
The Migration Amendment Regulations 2018 – an official decree that looks into the Visa Application Charges was approved by the Australian Government on June 21, 2018, making Visa Application Charges dearer than before.

Revised Point-Based Skilled Migration System
The Skilled Migration Programme in Australia, which has been designed to attract highly accomplished and experienced professionals to join Australia's skill requirements, operates on a point-based system. Hence, skilled workers who want to migrate to Australia on Skilled Migration Visa are required to score a minimum number of points in their application to be considered for Permanent Skilled Migration. While earlier workers were required to score a minimum of 60 points, from July 1, 2018, onwards this has been altered to 65 points for nominated, regional and independent visa categories.
Skilled Partner Age Limit Lowered For Permanent Visas to Australia
The latest set of changes with effect from July 1, 2018, also includes the lowering of the maximum age of a skilled partner to 45 for which the applicant can claim additional points in the general point’s parameter. Earlier, de facto partners and spouses of applicants of General Skilled Visas, who were below 50 years of age were able to claim additional five points. The changes introduced will apply to Skilled Independent visas belonging to Subclass 189 and 190 and Skilled Regional Subclass 489.
The launch of Global Talent Visa Scheme – On-Trial Basis
The Government of Australia has launched the Global Talent Visa Scheme, commencing in July 2018, on a trial basis for one year. The said visa scheme is aimed to invite highly capable personnel’s to deliver innovation to Australia’s tech industry. Start-ups and established business streams have been listed under this Scheme. However, in order to get on board and sponsor foreign workers, the employers must have a track record of hiring and training Australian workers.
