Note: For student visa applications by 22 March 2024, the GTE requirement is valid. However, for applications on or after 23 March 2024, the GS (Genuine Student) will be required. GTE was less comprehensive than the newly proposed GS Requirement. There will be questions to answer and a lot of documentation. Check out GS Requirements for Australian Visa and prepare yourselves accordingly.

gte requirement

GTE in Australia: The full form of GTE is a Genuine Temporary Entrant. GTE in Australia is a mandatory obligation that International students are required to undertake where they would have to provide substantial proof that they are coming to Australia temporarily to gain a quality education and in NO WAY maintain ongoing residency in Australia, illegally. Candidates should not in any way feel that the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) prerequisite is intended to exclude students who, after studying in Australia, develop skills Australia needs and who then go on to apply for permanent residence. On the contrary, the GTE condition is used to make sure the Australia student visa programme is utilized as planned.

GTE will be outdated requirement for applicants who file their subclass (500) student visa in Australia on or after 23 March 2024.

Genuine Temporary Entrant Student Visa - where to attach documents

So where would you submit your Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) documents? In the online Australia student visa application form, the candidate would need to provide a personal statement in English addressing the GTE requirement. This statement is to be 300 words in total and needs to address your personal circumstances for undertaking your proposed study in Australia. Along with your personal statement, the candidate will also be required to attach supporting documents to ImmiAccount - the official website of the Department of Home Affairs, Australian Government. Candidates should be aware that generic statements unsupported by evidence will not be weighed heavily in the GTE assessment. Read: GTE Statement Australia Sample

GTE in Australia Requirements

Now that we have established what GTE in Australia is. The next important part is to provide the concerned authority with adequate proof that you are visiting the country to gain quality education and not to maintain ongoing residency in Australia. For this, you will have to provide the right documents as GTE evidence or information. These include

  • Candidates are required to provide past-year academic transcripts showing qualifications achieved by the candidate. Your transcripts should have the name of the education provider, length of study and certificate of attainment.
  • Reasons for any gaps in your studies including where you did not maintain enrolment.
  • Candidates are also required to provide complete details of his/her current employment. This should include, your current employer, company address, period of employment, details of the position held at the organization and the name and contact details of someone who can confirm the circumstances of your employment
  • Candidates would also have to establish strong ties to their home country or country of residence. This would include proving evidence of financial, family or social ties. The candidate would be required to show he/she has a significant incentive to return home
  • Candidates would be required to ascertain the economic situation in their home country or country of residence. This would include documents showing employment or business activities for 12 months before lodging an application. Potential employment offers including salary and other benefits, after course completion and income tax return or bank statements.

How is GTE assessed?

So you have provided the required GTE documents. Now, we are going to be talking about how your Genuine Temporary Entrant in Australia is reviewed by the concerned authorities. These are the factors that are strongly taken into consideration:

The authorities look at the situations in your home country. GTE factors that are considered by the authorities include the candidate’s reason for not studying in his/her home country or region if a similar course is available there. Ties the candidate would have to their home country that support an intention to return after study is finished. The economic situation of the candidate is also scrutinized. The political and civil unrest (if any) in your home country and military service commitments are taken into consideration by the authorities during the GTE process.

GTE issuing authority also considers the applicant's level of knowledge of the proposed course and education provider, previous study and qualifications, planned living arrangements and financial stability. Furthermore, consistency of your preferred course with your current level of education, course relevancy to past or proposed future employment in your home country or a third country, expected salary and other benefits in your home country or a third country obtained with your qualifications from the proposed course of study, your immigration history, previous visa applications for Australia or other countries and visa refusals or cancellations are taken into consideration. Candidates should note that in case the applicant is minor then the intention of their parent, legal guardian or spouse is taken into deliberation.

Candidates wanting an insight into the factors that are taken into account when determining GTE requirements can take a look at the Ministerial Direction 69 before drafting their GTE statement, here: Ministerial Direction 69  | source: Department of Home Affairs, Australian Government. Candidates should note that the sole purpose of the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) is used to make sure the student visa program is accessed as intended and the student visa program is not a way for international students to maintain ongoing residency in Australia. The sole purpose of GTE is to identify applicants who are using the student visa program for motives other than gaining a quality education.
