Online intake

Following social distancing norms and restrictions on cross-border movements, Universities worldwide at their end are adjusting to the current situation. Thus, many universities are moving their courses online. Therefore, students can start with their studies and upscale their skills rather than wasting a complete one-year.

Q. If the current situation takes more time to normalize, will universities defer students to the next intake, move to online intake, or cancel the intake?

A. Universities are extending application deadlines from August to September. Some universities are also extending deadline applications beyond September until October, so, students can submit required academic and other documents.

Right now students can take admission for online intake and once the situation improves then students can transfer to on-campus intake. So they need not wait until the next session, they just need to apply for the student visa.

Students who are interested in applying to Australia can pick one or two courses right now and rest later then it is not going to affect their post-study time in any way especially those who are going to study in a Trimester system.

Worldwide, universities are helping students in their own way. Deakin University has allocated AUD 25 million to support international students. Students who are not able to do part-time jobs and are not able to pay their fee or rent, they are helping those students with support services or accommodation.  For new students pick one or two subject courses right now and pay for that much only.

Q. Can students continue with their jobs while pursuing an online course?

A. With online classes, working professionals can continue with their current jobs while at the same time they can enhance their skills.

Q. If students register for an online course, will their money is going to be locked, if they decide not to go later on, or not able to get visa?

A. If in any case, a student decides not to continue with the course, their money will be refunded.

For Australia, those who have enrolled for an online program will be at an advantage as all their paperwork must be complete, so, once the lockdown will be over they will be the first to get the student visa.

September 2020 intake

Q. Will Fall 2020 Intake be starting on time?

A. UK: Currently, UK universities are planning to start the Fall intake on time. Also, the universities are open to give more time to students to submit their application as exams are delayed in other countries as well, so it can happen that students won't be able to fulfill all the application requirements. So, the Fall intake can start in October depending on the situation.

Q. Those who have already paid a deposit but not like the online session?

A. If a student does not like online classes then they will be given the option to defer their admission or get a refund.

Impact on economy

Q. Given the current situation, will it be recommended to go for masters this year at all? How this pandemic will impact on part-time opportunities and placements?

A. The experts are divided on this, some experts feel that things will improve gradually while others feel that this is going to have a deep impact on the economies globally. As things will improve, the economy will be back on track. As we have seen in China, the situation has improved drastically there. However, the lockdowns will definitely have an impact on the world economy, so, students need to utilize this time efficiently and upgrade their skills, as this will open a ray of opportunities for them in the future.

Q. Are there any benefits of going for Fall 2020 intake for both UG and masters students?

A. As social distancing is going to be the new normal, students should also learn to live with it. UG students planning to skip a year now may have to face more competition later (next spring or fall) and loosing out on scholarship opportunities as well. Also, there are positives of taking admission for now like if you take online classes for 2-3 months then you can save the living expense for that time period apart from just securing admission.

Canada has also announced that pursuing an online course will not affect their post-study work visa in any way. The online study will be treated the same as in-person.

Experts suggest that it is not just for students but working professionals should also adopt to the changes. The sooner we will adapt to the new changes the better. Those who are seeking admission now will be job-ready by within two years, and the situation is going to get better from here and not vice versa.

Impact on entry criteria and scholarships

UK universities have already started giving unconditional offer letters to students. Cambridge and Queen’s University Belfast have given conditional offer letters to students based on their predictive scores. Keeping students’ interests in mind, universities have also extended deadlines for scholarships as well.

Skema Business School, France has given a fee waiver on the application fee. Also, the school has drastically reduced the amount which students need to deposit with the university from €5000 to €1000 considering the difficulty students are facing during the lockdown period and also offering more scholarships for this intake so more students can benefit and do not miss the opportunity because of finances.

Application process

Universities worldwide are making exemptions wherever possible whether it is extending deadlines for accepting the application process, submitting the LORs online, or being flexible in accepting academic documents. Universities understand that this a difficult time for everyone, so, they are also molding wherever they can moving to online classes is one of the initiatives which will benefit students and allow them to continue with their studies.

Impact on Student Visa

Q. Students are apprehensive about whether embassies are going to issue a student visa for September intake or not. What will happen to those who have already paid their semester fee but do not have their student visa with them yet?

A. Students/parents should understand that embassies have to handle all types of visa and other immigration work as well, so, delays will happen, you need to remain calm during this period. Also, once the lockdown will be over there will be a rush for getting visas, so, the earlier you apply the faster your application will be processed.

Post-COVID life not going to be the same. Social distancing measures need to be followed for at least a year or until the time a vaccine is developed to tackle it. So, even if you are planning for studies or work, you need to be aware of the online working style as from now onwards organizations and educational institutes will move online in on large scale, and you should be aware of the latest market trend or the new normal.
