Weifang Medical University (WMU) 

WMU is a state medical university in China which is over 100 years old.  Located near Qingdao city, the WMU campus is spread over 1.2 million square meters.  The place has a climate similar to Delhi (i.e. min temperature of -5 degrees Centigrade in winter to a maximum of 30 degrees Centigrade in summer).








Catering to specialised education in the field of medicine and related fields, WMU has six comprehensive teaching laboratories, 16 specialised laboratories and boasts of more than 10,000 sets of scientific & research instruments.   • The medium of instruction: The course is taught in English. However, a student has to study Chinese for the first two years. This enables the student to interact with Chinese patients at WMU.
  • Intake: WMU has 2 intakes/admissions – i.e. March & September.

  • Processing time: The course begins on 15th September.  The applicant can expect an offer letter in one week from his/her registration date. WMU claims to guarantee Chinese visa in two weeks after submitting student’s papers.
  • Alumni: Over 2,000 Indian students have completed MBBS course from WMU. After passing the MCI exam, qualified doctors are practising medicine in different parts of India.
  • Hostel accommodation: This facility is available at WMU on a twin sharing basis. Each room is equipped with a telephone, internet and a TV. Moreover, each room has an attached bathroom with hot/cold water 24/7.  There are separate floors in each hostel for male and female students.

Studying MBBS in China v/s Russia – A comparison

A number of students also think of studying MBBS in Russia. If you are also considering China as a choice, you may want to consider the following points before taking a decision:

  • It takes 5 years  to secure MBBS in China as compared to 6 years in Russia 
  • The climate in Russia is more extreme for Indian students (ranges from -5 to -25 degrees centigrade), as compared to China.

Registration with the MCI

An Indian who passes the MBBS course abroad must pass the examination conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI) in Delhi and complete the internship in India before he/she can register as a doctor in India. The MCI examination is conducted in Delhi every six months.

WMU observes that MBBS candidates prefer to join a coaching class for this examination which is conducted in Delhi. This class charges about Rs 5,000 per month. Normally, 2-month coaching is considered adequate. According to WMU, about 60% of the students who pass MBBS in China pass the MCI examination in the first attempt.

After passing the MCI examination, it is mandatory for the student to complete a one-year internship in India. If the student completes the internship outside Delhi, the student is required to pay the MCI Rs 1 lakh prior to completing the internship.
