Promotions for soldiers is based upon training performance every willing soldier opts for. For example N Cadre, for becoming a Naik (two stripes), H Cadre for promotion as Havildar (three stripes) and so on. Once qualified he is promoted as per seniority and availability of vacancy. After serving in that rank for around 5 years, a sepoy is promoted to Lance Naik (one arm strip). After another 4-5 years, he is promoted to Naik (corporal in western armies). A naik wears 2 arm strips. Subedar-Major is the highest rank that a soldier who join as a sepoy can attain.
