Ahmedabad Medical School and the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital merged after the latter's establishment in 1871. At first, the school only had 14 students enrolled in its medical assistant program. Following his donation of Rs. 20,000 in 1879, Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy renamed the school B. J. Medical School dedicated to him. As the school grew, it became a member of the Bombay College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1917.
