The making of the film involves producers, directors, script and screenplay writers, camera people, cinematographers and actors. As such the director is the captain of the ship and has a good working knowledge of all the above areas. As a fresher, one needs to align oneself with a director with the objective of getting hands-on experience and basically trying to learn the ropes. With time and experience, one can hope to grow to the position of an Assistant Director and subsequently a Director. Most beginners get a starting salary between Rs 5000 and Rs 10,000 per month depending on the qualification of the person and the size of the company. Assistant directors would get paid between Rs 30,000 and Rs 50,000 per month. A filmmaker can eventually be the creative head of a production house where earnings could range between Rs 10 lacs and Rs 30 lacs per annum. Freelancer filmmakers could earn anywhere between Rs 2 lacs to Rs 15-20 lacs per film depending on the reputation of the filmmaker, nature and quality of equipment used and the client's needs. Some institutes for undergraduate courses are Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu, CIT Campus, Chennai. (3-year courses in direction, screenplay writing and cinematography, Diploma courses in Sound recording and engineering, Film Processing and Film editing). Some of the post graduate courses and Diplomas are offered by : AJ Kidwai Mass Communications Research centre (MCRC), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi (2-year Diploma in mass communications with specialisation in film making), Film and Television Institute of India, Law College Road, Pune (one year course and shorter term diplomas in all aspects of film making), Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communications, Senapati Bapat Marg, Pune While courses are open to graduates in any field, courses in cinematography and audiography at the undergraduate and post graduate level require a background in Science in Class XII and / or graduation in the sciences or engineering.
