B.Sc Nautical Science

Entry requirements:
You can join the merchant navy from age 16 as an officer cadet or as an apprentice able seafarer (deck). You'll need at least 4 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English, maths and physics (or combined Science) or equivalent qualifications. If you have A levels or equivalent, in maths or Science, you could do an industry-backed HND, foundation degree, or degree. Subjects include nautical Science, and navigation and maritime Science. If you already have a degree, you'll usually be able to join a graduate programme and train as an officer in a shorter time. You'll need to pass a medical exam which will include a physical fitness and eyesight test. You'll usually need a maritime sponsoring company to put you through initial training.

In Diploma in Nautical Science, the students have to undergo a one-year pre-sea course in any of the DG approved institutes like IMI. Afterwards, they approach the shipping companies and if fortunate then they get selected for the campus recruitment interview. They need to complete a sailing of minimum 18 months on an above 500 GRT vessel and thereafter approach for written and oral exams for second officer or mate. The B.Sc. Nautical Science students undergo 3 years course in a DG approved institute and need to complete 12 months minimum sailing in an above 500 GRT vessel. Thereafter, they have to appear for written and oral exams for second mates. Moreover, after completing 3 years degree, they get a convocation certificate. This helps them pursue either a career in Merchant Navy or in any other sector of their choice. Choose according to your interest.
