Entry requirements:
You can join the merchant navy from age 16 as an officer cadet or as an apprentice able seafarer (deck). You'll need at least 4 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), including English, maths and physics (or combined Science) or equivalent qualifications. It will be tough but if you have luck in your side, then who knows. If not, then there are several private colleges and universities. Yes, they are much expensive also. And another thing you can do is first do diploma, then B.Sc. Make the best choice.

Hi,
In Diploma in Nautical Science, the students have to undergo a one-year pre-sea course in any of the DG approved institutes like IMI. Afterwards, they approach the shipping companies and if fortunate then they get selected for the campus recruitment interview. They need to complete a sailing of minimum 18 months on an above 500 GRT vessel and thereafter approach for written and oral exams for second officer or mate. The B.Sc. Nautical Science students undergo 3 years course in a DG approved institute and need to complete 12 months minimum sailing in an above 500 GRT vessel. Successful graduates of the course are hired in capacities such as Deck Cadet, Second Officer, Chief Officer, Captain, besides positions such as Marine Engineer, Oceanographer, Radio Officer, Nautical Surveyors. Placements, however is not guaranteed and graduates who show good aptitude and good performance during their course of study are most likely to GET placed. Regards.
