I'm assuming that you're already a Biotech student at NSIT. So, the option of switching to COE/IT or related courses is out of reach.
Do biotech students get time for other activities?
Well, that's up to you. No engineering course is so intense that will keep you engaged all the time. The amount of time you can take out for other activities (e.g. programming, at it seems, in your case) is completely in your hands.
A major portion of students get placed in software related profiles (irrespective of their branch). That is good enough indicator of the coding atmosphere in NSIT. There are a number of platforms through which you can enhance

Computer Science and Engineering are the best Engineering branches of today. IT Sector is growing very much. Thus, generation of jobs also increases.
Talking about the placements of Computer Science Engineering at BMS College of Engineering, it is almost 90% ratio is seen every year.

Average package of COE branch of NSIT 2016 batch was around 14lacs.
Advice:- Don't look on average package, always ask for median package. Because average package can fool you, because if a person was selected in Google or Facebook or any other company having a big package that would increase the average by a huge amount(for example a student placed in Facebook with a package of 1 crore would drastically increase average package). On the other hand median is the package of the student who was in middle when students are arranged in decreasing/increasing order of package offered to him/her. Talking about the placements of PI Engineering at IIT-Delhi, it is almost 100%.
The average package of PI Engineering at IIT-Delhi is around 6 to 9 LPA.

I would like to mention that, IIT, Madras is known as one of the best colleges for civil engineering.
There are awesome packages offered in placements for civil engineering at IIT, Madras. Almost 95% ratio is seen every year. The scope of civil branch is quite good.
The minimum.package offered is Rs 4 to Rs 5. Average package of civil engineering at IIT, Madras is around Rs 8 to Rs 9 lakhs per annum and has gone up to around Rs 17 LPA.
Many multinational companies visit here and offer good packages to Civil Engineers.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is among the best engineering Institutes of India. Very much placement ratio is seen here at every year in every branch.
Talking about placements of electrical engineering at IIT-Kanpur, the placement ratio is very good and it is around 80 to 90%. The average package is around 5 to 7 LPA.

Though the college is not so much remarkable and up to the mark when it comes to infrastructure but is improving itself and hence can be considered as okay.
Now, coming to the placement stats, the average placement from here is around 3 to 4 lakh and highest package offered is from Microsoft which is around 16 lakhs.
Although, the above placement data is from CSE, ECE, IT, etc.
