Yes, of course. In fact, it is very nice to hear from you that you are interested in the research in Environmental Science. This is the subject which is most important for the very survival of human race in this world. Graduating from IIT will definitely give you a firm Foundation from which you can seek research oriented jobs in either a government lab or some other place. Yes, it is possible to get into research field after studying B.Tech. If you go for research after engineering than it would be easy for you to develop and create new things with your new research ideas since B.Tech or engineering will focus on 360 development of your brain and personality. There are a number of researches that are the gifts of engineers so add yourself among them. Just be passionate and dedicated.

The candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination by a recognised board and B.Sc physics with 50% or above marks in aggregate. The candidate must have passed B.Sc (General/Programme/B.Sc).

It's true that nowadays a lot of engineers are jobless but most of them are mechanical and civil for which job are little low in India but i still say that engineering is a good choice if you select the right branch which suits your interests and in india CS and IT branches have growing scope due yo growing IT sector and i think it will be good even after 4 years.
