Is Biology not a reasonable prerequisite to expect from future biomedical engineers? Of course it is an appropriate expectation from the engineers, since they are designing for the human body.

No, biology isn't compulsory.
There are five sections in the NEST exam. The General Section i.e. the first section is compulsory for all. From the rest of the four sections (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology) you can answer any three of them. If you wish then you can also answer all of the four sections. In that case best 3 subjects will be considered for the merit list.

Hi,
As per the eligibility:
A candidate must have either passed or appearing in the 12th or any equivalent examination from a recognized board of education with physics, chemistry and biology/biotechnology as subjects of study. The candidates must also have scored a minimum of 50% marks in 12th and for reserved category students the minimum 45%.
NIOS board students are eligible to appear for NEET exam.

If you are looking to get admission abroad, then you need to have MCI certificate, which is mandatory. The students obtaining 50% marks in (PCBE) i.e. physics, chemistry, biology, and English (40% marks in case of students belonging to reserved category) in class 12th with science and over 17 years of age are eligible for medical studies as per the norms of MCI .
