In India, BUMS doctors are trained in the Unani system of medicine, which is distinct from modern or "English" medicine (allopathy). As per regulations by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), BUMS doctors are legally allowed to practice only Unani medicine. However, some states in India permit practitioners of alternative medicine systems, including BUMS, to prescribe certain allopathic medicines under specific guidelines. Despite this, BUMS doctors are not officially recognised as allopathic practitioners, and prescribing English medicines outside these guidelines can lead to legal consequences.
