A gap of 5 years is acceptable for getting a visa for Canada. For undergraduate programs the gap accepted in education is two years and for PG a gap of more than five years is also accepted.

This is good though of higher education but I think if you have good base in mechanical you should pursue Bachelor in mechanical engineering because Very large PSUs offer job in mechanical.
