Hi,
You can start preparing from right now. It's better to join a reputed coaching institute. But, as you have almost 2 years to give CAT 2018, start with self-study and go through all the basic and after knowing about your strength and weakness in different areas join a good coaching institute. This would ease your preparation a lot. Be like the tortoise from the motivating story "The Tortoise & Hare". Have the zeal like the tortoise and succeed.
All the best!

Coaching institute is a good option for preparing CAT entrance exam and other MBA entrance exams. They will definitely guide you in a proper way. Career Launcher do have good reputation for CAT preparation and its test series is also challenging.

Your gap of a year will not at all be a reason of hindrance in your admission process or percentile for that matter.

Dear Satvika Koganti,
CAT and MAT exams require time. You can start your own preparation for both the exams by collecting material from the market. Later on, you can take coaching from a reputed institution and then solve old question papers to crack the exam.
All the best.
