Candidates may take the exams in any order. The two-year period commences from the date of the first successful PRM examination. Candidates may take exams over more than a two-year period, but any exams passed more than two years in the past will need to be retaken. Candidates may retake any failed exam, but must wait 60 days from the date of the failed exam.

On average, it takes six to seven years to meet the combination of education and experience requirements to become a Certified Internal Auditor. It's possible to overlap your three-year eligibility period and pass the CIA exam before completing your experience requirement. The CIA programme accepts degree and non-degree candidates without experience for entry. However, a candidate without a Bachelor's or master's degree needs at least five years of internal audit experience to begin. All candidates must have professional experience before exiting the programme and receiving CIA certification.
