Queen Margaret University was founded in 1875. It was established as the Edinburgh School of Cookery in 1875. The name Queen Margaret University was adopted in the year 1972. The need for a new title arose to ensure that the institute would no longer be associated solely with cookery. The name Queen Margaret was chosen because the queen was seen to personify the important values of serving the community and enhancing the quality of life.
