Candidates have to qualify UGC NET exam to pursue for Ph.D. The UGC NET exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency NTA from December 2018, earlier it was organized by the CBSE. Candidates who have qualified post-graduation or in qualifying year of Masters can apply for the NET exam. You can get the complete details related to the exam from here –

According to the NET exam guidelines, there is no restriction on a number of attempts. But if you want to apply for the UGC NET JRF exam then your age must not exceed 30 years. Till that, you can apply as many time as you want. But if you appear for Assistant Professor then there in no age limit criteria. Yes, if you have done B.Tech, you are eligible for CSIR NET and the maximum age to apply is 28 years.
