First, a bit of a background. I did my mechanical engineering from a decent state level university college and I got placed into IBM in the final year. Having no other options, I joined IBM after college. But I wanted to work in a field of my engineering background, and so I also took up GATE coaching at ACE Academy. I got a rank of ~4000 in GATE 2016. Since I didnt get into any PSU or IIT with this rank, I had to continue looking for other options, which is when I applied to ISRO. Now, coming to the experience, let me give you an overview of the selection process. There's 2 stages for ISRO recruitment. First is a written exam, 80 questions, 90 minutes. 3 marks for correct answer and a negative mark for each wrong answer. You can look up the syllabus on their website. The board uses the exam as a way to shortlist candidates for the interview. Your selection depends only on your performance in the interview. The candidates are called for the interview in the ratio of around 89 candidates per post. For preparing for the exam I only revised the notes I had prepared for GATE and then went through all previous year question papers. I bought this book which had previous question papers for ISRO and DRDO. (MADE EASY Publications). I felt the ISRO exam requires time management as we had to answer more questions in lesser time for this exam (unlike GATE where time constraint is not felt). To get used to this, I set a timer and wrote the previous exam papers as though I am writing the actual exam. Then I made a list of questions I made mistakes in, and a list of theoretical questions for which I didnt know the answer. Revised these questions again before the exam once. I managed to get 140/240. The cutoff was around 130 I think. I was requested to come to NRSA Hyderabad for the interview. I contacted one of my tutor from ACE academy and requested for help in preparing for the interview. He arranged a mock interview with the senior faculty at ACE. The director of the institute also spoke to me and gave me tips to prepare for the interview. A big thanks to all of them :). The reporting time for the interview was 8 AM. But I was the second last person to be interviewed and my interview happened at 9 PM. Despite the long and boring wait, I went into the interview hall with a lot of energy and a big smile on my face. There were 6 panel members and a chairman. The chairman asked me to explain what I work at IBM (I work on an ERP tool). Then he asked me to explain.

If you are a newcomer, you will have one year of classroom training as a JET (9 months classroom + 3 months plant training), where you will not be paid but will receive a stipend. You'll get a stipend of INR 8,000 per month. After one year of training, you'll be fine enrolling in the company payroll with a basic salary of INR 17,420 per month and taking into account the DA, allowances, bonus, LTA, and so on. The salary of Indian Space Research organisation scientists ranges anywhere between INR 15600 to INR 39100 per month as the basic pay. The 7th Pay commission revised the Indian Space Research organisation Scientist salary per month and allowances. The monthly basic pay of ISRO is INR 15,600 increased with grade pay of INR 6,600. The maximum monthly salary for an Indian Space Research organisation scientist is INR 80,000, with a consequent increase in the grade pay. There have been some changes in the allowances of Indian Space Research organisation scientists after the introduction of the 7th Pay Commission.
1- Basic Pay = Pay Band + Grade Pay.
2- Employees will receive a DA which will be revised twice a year. As per the records of 0215, the Dearness allowance is 113 percent every month.
3- House Rent Allowance is dependent on the classification of the city they are posted to according to the Government of India Rules. The House Rent Allowance varies from 10 percent to 30 percent of the basic pay.
4- The TA varies from INR 400 to INR 3,200 depending on the grade of pay and depending on the city of posting.

Preparations:
1- Visit the official website to learn about the products BEL makes and try to include them in your answers as examples (about the company, when it was established, yearly turnover, etc. , like basic information about the company).
2- At least two subjects you know about (Using radar or communication or Electronics and communication, choose at least one of them. )
3- Prepare for it around your 3rd year of training in such a way that you can give an hour of debate on it. If you fail, tell about the final year project. If your project has not yet been completed, or at least the basics of what you intend to do, in the case of campus placement.
4- Prepare yourself to maintain confidence under pressure, even if you don't know the answer, don't lose your confidence.
5- Always remember that you don't need to answer every question to get selected. Answer most of them and show confidence whenever you don't know about the others.
6- The most important thing is don't fight with the interviewer; if they say you are wrong, just explain your point of view and accept theirs. They will purposely put you in a trap to check your attitude whether you fight or handle things with a calm attitude.

According to my knowledge, both engineering and architecture have a good scope in India. But engineering has more opportunities in countries like India because there are many sub-branches in it. Engineering students in India are increasing year after year, but the lower number of architecture students is actually a benefit. Choosing a branch or course depends on your interest or passion, so I recommend choosing according to your interest. Architect salary in India ranges between INR 3.0 LPA to INR 40.0 LPA with an average annual salary of INR 19.1 LPA.
