IIT's, NIT and BITS top the list of best engineering colleges in India. However along with this there are also some other institutions in India offering engineering courses and have a very good placement records and rankings.

Mechanical engg is well established in India whereas automation engg is not that much available nor in demand. It is still picking up in India. However there are universities offering automation also. Finally it depends on your interest which one you consider fine to go for. In my opinion mech will be better option as it will give you more opportunities than automation.
